The SAPIENT project (Situation-Aware Protocols in Edge Network Technologies) aimed to improve the performance of network applications specifically in wireless networks by examining both the traffic on a network and the real-time characteristics of the network.  By being aware of the different network flows and the  state of the network, SAPIENT can  shape the traffic on the network on a per-flow basis, improving the performance of the applications on the network.

Responsibilities

I was added to the project in its later phases, tasked with creating a test bed for the Sapient system, particularly one that queues network traffic accoding to flows and a customized protocol stack capable of perfoming the various operations needed for the flow shaping.  The system utilizes both raw sockets and the libipq library to complete these tasks in user-space.

Faculty

The SAPIENT project was a DARPA funded project undertaken by Drexel University in conjuction with Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Labs (ATL) in Camden, NJ.  At Drexel, Moshe Kam and Spiros Mancoridis led the project.
